AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

Another solution is the Air Parrot.

Oct 17, 2013 7:56 PM in response to lucinha82by Aya11,Were you able to solve your airplay icon issue? My mac air Mid 2012 also doesn't detect Apple TV (I bought it yesterday). I have set up right. Airplay Mirroing Icon does not show Apple TV...HDTV shows bright multi color lines on its screen while Apple TV is on...Well, I have done all what I could do. I need help or I return the Apple TV then get back to the cable for my presentation on HDTV.
I shall contact Apple TV suppot before I return it. Or I may need Air Parrot for 2012 Mid Mac Air???
