Until a few minutes ago, I was able to arrange photos within my iPhoto library by simply dragging them. It was so convenient. Other photos just moved out of the way to make things easier. Now, however, although I can still drag photos, I can't get them to stay anywhere. I'm sure the fix is easy, but what is it?

Well, I need to be able to move photos around in order to organize them (delete duplicates, put similar pictures together, etc.). My understanding that all photos go first into the file entitled "Last 12 months". Could it be that pictures that are put here are automatically duplicated in some other file where they can be sorted? If not, what is the best way to be able to organize ALL of my photos? This will be my "Mother file". From there, I'll be able to create special single-purpose files. I just want some place where I can know that ALL of my photos are stored.

I'm not sure that I completely understand you, except that I agree that there is only one iPhoto library. I never thought differently. Now, then, here's what I have:
A. LIBRARY: Events, Photos, Faces, Places
B. RECENT: TueSept 11,12; Last 12 months; Last import, Flagged, Printing, Trash
C. ALBUMS: Annette, Sheet music, Records, Untitled album
D. SLIDESHOWS: Many
In "Last 12 months," I had thought that all of my iPhoto files were there. What "Events" is supposed to include, I don't know, but it looks like it has most of my photos/files. In my "Annette" file, I have everything about her that I have: pictures of her, sheet music with her name, newspaper articles, pictures of her phonograph records, etc.
In my "sheet music" file, I have sheet music covers with her picture or name, In "Records" I have pictures of records that she recorded. These are what I call my "single-purpose"files, a special file for sheet music covers with her name or picture, etc. I guess that's what you call "albums".
You say that there are no files in iPhoto. I can acept that. I had been calling graphs, or written material, etc. files, but I can see why you call them photos. That's okay with me.
I think the key question is this: Does the "Events" file include all of the photos in my iPhoto library? If so, my problems are over.
This works in Albums and not Events or Photos view.

Your photos go to the Library, that's the only place they go, ever.
Events and Photos are ways of looking at the Library - different doorways to the same room.
There are no other places, no other files or folders than the Library.
Everything else is a list, not a place.
Last 12 months is a list of photos from... the last 12 months. Last Import is a list of the files in the last import. An Album is a list of images you decide should go together. A Smart Album is the result of a search and so on.
So the Library is where everything lives.
Now you need to start thinking in iPhoto terminology.
There are no files in iPhoto. There are Photos, in Albums and Events. Folders can contain only Albums or other Folders.
So I have no idea what you mean by "special single-purpose files"

B., C., D., are not Places. They are Lists.
So are Faces and Places. Lists.
The Only Place is Library. Events and Photos are the same thing. Two ways of looking at exactly the same thing. Two windows to the same room. To views of the same material. If it's in Photos then it's in Events and vice versa.
It is possible that 'Last 12 Months' lists all your Photos, but only if all your photos are taken in the last 12 months.
Events (and Photos) contain all your images.

You have also been using the word 'file' for Albums (at least) as in 'In my "sheet music" file...' So, you're using 'file' to denote individual items and arbritrary groups of items interchangeably. The problem with that is it's hard for me to give accurate information as your use of the word is ambiguous.
I'm having the same problem. I cannot drag and drop photos in albums. I used to be able to do this. It's frustrating, because I'm in Real Estate, and when I have several shots of the same room or facade, I need them to be side by side to decide which one to keep. Can you help me with this?
1 - have you read the thread carefully?
2 - are you speaking of iPhoto albums? Or some othr iPhoto entity?

I figured it out. Put the photos you want to rearrange into an album(you're calling it a file). Then you can drop and drag them.
It's confusing. Just remember not to try to do it anywhere but there. In the actual photos, they stay in the order they
were input in, because that's your library, the root to all the other places, e.g., events, albums, etc.
Get it? It took me a while, too. And I already knew it from before, but I hadn't done it in a while.
Correct - it is easy in an album
You generally have the concept which if you want to use iPhoto is critical

Similar issue here. I am unable to drag photos from the library into Albums. The Albums will not accept the photos.

If you want an answer you have to provide details including the version of iPhoto and what happens when you try as well as exactly what you are doing

Thanks. Well, I've just solved the prolem. Maybe. It's iPhoto '09, version 8.1.2. When I was in the Photos view, and trying to drag a photo or a group of photos over into an album, the album was not accepting the photos. It would just send the photo drifting back into the Photos view and the photo would not be in the album. However just now, I noticed that the rectangular box that goes around the album name was way above where I was moving the cursor. So it worked when I moved the cursor down so that the rectangular box surrounded the correct album. And now, when I try it again, that rectangular box moves with the cursor again. So I don't know if the other times I was trying to get the photo into the album I just didn't see that rectangular box way above where it should be, or if it was so far above you couldn't see it onscreen, or what. Anyway, it seems to be working now. Feel free to add any info if you want to.
