Synching music files that contain no metadata

My father has just bought a new iPad, and will need to sync some of his music tracks that he has in iTunes.

The only problem is that none of these many thousands of files contain any id3 tag information. I did tell him at the time that it would be best to have at least the title and artist tagged for each track, but he said that he would rather just have the plain file name. The tracks were ripped or recorded from cassette or lp many years ago. I suppose my question is, can the files still be synced to his iPad, and if so how will they appear?

Thanks for reading.
