Did you purchase an unlocked iPhone from an Apple Store? Not no contract, unlocked.
no it was unlucked
Certain countries have different requirements for a large number of things, such as electrical input and carrier support. As such, iPhones that are built to work with a cellular network and the cellular bands they use may not work in a country which uses completely different networks and bands.
This article is specifically about LTE, but the same principal applies for 3G, etc
