I just bought a new ipad last month, its battery doesnt last more than 4-5 hours, is it the normal life cycle of battery after a 100% recharge?

There are things you can do to help preserve battery life.

Keep the screen brightness down if you do not need it at full brightness.

Turn off Airplane mode,

Turn off Bluetooth if you do not use any Bluetooth devices with your iPad.

Turn of notifications for apps you do not need notifications for.

Set the iPad screen to go dark sooner.

Normal battery life should be about twice that. However it's also possible that you have a lot of stuff running that you don't even realize you have running. Notifications can be a biggie. You can have a dozen apps running for notifications and not even know it.

Also your mail, if you have it set to push then your iPad can be 'reaching out' every 15 minutes or longer to get new mail. Set it to fetch, then it only gets mail when you tell it to.

Airplane mode won't help you much because all it does is turn off all the radios, which means you can't get wifi, so you only use that when you want to totally cut your device off the internet. (airplane mode is just that, something meant to be used when on planes to adhere to their 'no radios/transmissions' rule)

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. Was it a brand new iPad? Your signature says "iPad iOS 5" and no brand new iPad bought recently would have come with iOS 5 installed on it.
