Score - HELP!- grace notes and slurs!!?

Just finished a piano piece (3 voices) and can't figure out how to insert grace notes, or get the fxxxing slur tool to work correctly. Any tips out there? (I searched key command for "grace notes" and found nothing.)
Many thanks!

Hi there,

If the terms below are not familiar to you, check:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornament_%28music%29

The first thing to say is that the grace note needs to be "independent", which means that it doesn't form part of the beat count in a bar. So, to create a acciaccatura use:

Attributes > Independent Grace Note

or, to create an appoggiatura, use

Attributes > Independent

The acciaccatura is automatically stem up and the appogiatura conforms to position on the stave and layer. You can change either of these by using:

Atttributes > Stems

The acciaccatura creates a slur automatically while the appoggiatura doesn't - you have to add your own.

Sorry - got to run now (England football match this afternoon and have to go and get beers in) so can't do slurs now. I'll try and remember to pop by later.

as above is all correct, though you might find it easier opening the attributes for your grace note by double-clicking on it.

it is by far easier if you assign KC's for all these things, including 'reset attributes' (useful when you need to start again)

there are workarounds for multiple grace notes which i can explain to you if you need them.

the easiest way to use the slurs is to again use a KC. simply select the notes that you want slurred and hit the KC. you will need one for slur up and 1 for slur down. the advantage with logic as far as i can tell over the other notating programs is the ease with which you can do some of the editing tasks such as inserting slurs over several staves (ie per instrument) in one go.

there are limitations too, but they can be beaten into submisission (usually) and logics score notator is currently being overhauled (at long last), so its probably worth learning and sticking with in the long run.

Rohan,

If you have a trick for creating beamed independent grace notes then I'm all eyes and ears!

Example: an 4 note arpeggiated chord on Harp that is to be played just before the downbeat with the penultimate note landing on the downbeat. The way I'd like to notate this is to have the chord itself appear on the downbeat, but have the arpeggiation of that chord appear before the barline using beamed, cue-sized 16th or 32nd notes. The key here is that these notes be independent, but beamed. Got any ideas? (This pic isn't entirely correct -- the last grace note shouldn't be there, but I think you get the idea...)

yes, i do this all the time.

- create a score style with 2 voices in the treble clef (make sure that the rests and what-have-you are hidden)

- play in and beam your arpeggiation.

- set the midi channel to the other voice (2nd one in treble clef)

- resize notes.

i have on occasion goten pretty an*l and inleded a line for the grace notes, but it can cause formating problems later on. a bit of a hassle. would like this set up in a little bit more usable and flexible fashion when they upgrade score.
