I just bought a few rentals on my iPad mini and am wondering if i need a wifi connection to watch them or can i watch them on a bus/train/plane trip?

Turn on airplane mode, and try playing them.
You do not need WiFi to watch rental movies/ TV shows. Of course you will have to download them when you have WiFi but ounce it is downloaded, it is just like a regular moie. The only difference is that it dissappears from your iPad ounce your rental period is up. But watching the movie on the go should be no problem at all.
