Unless you tell us what the details in Connection Doctor say how can we tell what may be the cause? We can't see your Mac so you need to supply the information.
Google publish Server settings on their site.
interesting help if I knew info was needed i would have started there.connection md says could not connect to SMTP server.check network and check correct info all of which i have done to my best under standing.
Evidently you assume I have knowledge and am deliberatelly not forth coming I simply do not know how to give you what you ask. I DONT KNOW HOW TO TAKE SCREEN SHOTS OR I would be glad to provide.
I don't know why you need to take out your frustration on someone who is trying to help you, but I do not have to put up with it. Goodbye.
csounds responses 1unless you tell us...iinstead of simply asking: what did connection....2(screen shot)if you dont want to provide..I acknowledge my low cmpute I.Q. perhaps csound doesn't enjoy working with lower functioning users and so he accusses instead of taking time to help lesser informed,he projects his frustration and tosses it to me.
If you've activated 2-step verification, you need to generate a new "application-specific password" in your Google account and enter it in place of your old password.
Eric Thank you I appreciate your tip.Linc to my knowledge i havent activated that process because I was having problems with above.
Has your Gmail account ever worked in Mail, and if so, did you make any changes to the account, either in Mail or on the Gmail website, before it stopped working?
I did.i started a gmail account for my wife.Let me check on possible mix up on my part with accounts.
smpt.mail.gmail.com is wrong. From the gmail help pages:
thanks Linc and Daniel.I want to thank all of you for your help.Accounts are now up and running. And for your patience.

Ive had similar problems but my eventual solution (5 mins ago) was to change the DNS server settings. Basically what I found was that the mac doesn't necessarily work with the default DNS setting. I had seen a thread a couple of month ago with some new settings which I tried and it eventually worked.
For future ref:
Go to system preferences
Network
Advanced
DNS
+ under the DNS server and the settings that worked for me and I'm using a BT hub, were:
62.6.40.162
194.72.9.34
Then in my mail preferences I left use only this server unchecked in the smtp section.
The other bit of advice, is to go into your router and name the device rather than have a numerical code. Again it helps with the communication between the router and the device.
Im not an expert, and these steps worked for me and I know how frustrating it is with this problem.
Good luck to all future desperados
Ive just found the original thread:
Hi
There's three ways to fix this:
1) Specify dns on the mac: Click the finder icon - apple - system preferences - network - (select either wireless or ethernet) - click advanced - click dns - click the plus - enter two dns servers, i.e. 62.6.40.162 and 194.72.9.34
2) Change the hostname on the router: Open safari - type in the address bar 192.168.1.254 - click settings - enter your password, click advanced settings - continue to advanced settings - business network and rename your mac in the network to something with one word and no puntuation, i.e rename unknown45:ae:01:ee to "Mac" or "laptop".
3) Change the name of the mac:
Open a Terminal window and enter the following command "scutil --set HostName newhostname" replace newhostname with whatever you wish to call the Mac. Use the following requirements, it must begin with a letter and can contain letters and numbers. Try to keep it under 64 characters as well.
• Click on the Apple icon, then System Preferences. In there, should be an option called Sharing. If not there will be a show all button at the top, click this, then click Sharing.
• In the window this brings up click Edit
• In the window this brings set the Local Hostname field to contain the exact same thing you set the hostname to in the terminal
• Back into the System Preferences page and click on Network
• Select the Location option at the top and in the menu that pops up click Edit Locations
• Click the plus button and give the new location any name.
• Once this is done the computer may loose all connectivity. If using Wi-Fi click on the Wifi option on the left of the network pane and it should reconnect to the network without having to re-enter security keys or anything.
• If using Ethernet, it might just work, make sure Ethernets selected on the left and check through the advanced options, try doing DHCP release and renew etc.
Option 1 should work fine as long as the settings are not changed in future and BT do not retire the particular dns server you use.
Option 2 will work for the hostname you change (although may require a reboot) on the router it is connected too (if you connect to another hub 3 the hostname would need to be updated again).
Option 3 - (apple support should be able to help set this up if you are uncomfortablemaking the changes) should work for any connection as the issue primarily lies with the hostname on the machine. Ensure there is no punctuation or spaces in the hostname.
