Error while migrating

My 10.6 wiki server had 258 group wikis and I was trying to migrate to a new 10.8.4 Mac Mini with OS X Server.

After about two hours of migrating it threw this error at me:

Any ideas on the next step?

Do I just try it again and hope for the best?

Can I just try importing one wiki at a time into whatever migrated over?

Do I have to delete all the files in the new wiki and try again one at a time?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This is a system based error. By default, the OS can only support 12288 open files. Do you think that between all the wikis you have over 12288 files (minus other open files on your system)? That seems kind of high. You could change the allowed number of open files to 20,000 (or some higher value) with...

sudo sysctl -w kern.maxfiles=20000

However, I'm curious if there isn't something else going on.

I have no idea how many files the migration had open at once, but I'm happy to try increasing maxfiles.

The bigger question though is what do I do with the partial migration? Will Postgres have forgotton all the wikis it had been importing before it got to the error? They certainly don't show up if I log into the wiki. Do I have to do something to clear out the garbage left by the partial migration before I can attempt another shot?

I was just following the migration instructions on going from a 10.6.8 wiki to a 10.8 wiki, although with 258 wikis and who knows how much content I can imagine this is going to be a bumpy ride.

I decided to just give it another shot, but importing one wiki at a time.

So far I've gotten 25 wikis imported but #26 is taking a LONG time...more than an hour!

But at least things are importing.

So now I just have to keep importing the next wikis, just 232 wikis to go....take one down, pass it around... 😝

So safety tip to folks who actually use their 10.6 wikis, don't try to migrate everything at once. Unless you're lucky, you'll be sorry.... 😟
