iBooks deleted pdfs and downloaded epubs from my iPad?

I was putting some pdfs from Dropbox into my iBooks app, and it (iBooks) suddenly deleted some recently downloaded pdfs and epub files? It didn't crash, and I tried turning it off and on again, but they're nowhere to be found and some haven't been backed up yet. How can I get them back?!
