Q: I can't get my internet sharing to work between my Macbook Pro and my Intel tower

Hello Community,
I have a 4 year old Mac Pro Intel tower that seems to be out of range of the wifi in my house.  I have been using my Mac Book Pro's wifi conncection (which works fine in the same room that my Intel tower's connection is poor) and with internet sharing I've been able to get the internet on my tower via an ethernet cable.  Untill recently this solution has been working fine for me.  But in the past few weeks, no matter how many times i reboot, re-engage internet sharing or switch to different ethernet ports I have not been able to get this system to work for me.  Under Network status for the tower I get a green light for Ethernet, Network Settings and ISP, but red lights for Internet and Server.   I'm wondering what has changed.   My tower is about 4 years old and is on 10.6.7.  The MacBook Pro is 1 years old and on 10.8.4.  I have included screen shots of both computers.  The top photo is the tower and the bottom is my laptop.  Please HELP!

Forgot to add, on the laptop that doesn't work, forget now if it was #1 or #2...

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

Both lap tops connect to the netword just fine.  BUT i haven't been able to consistantly share either lap top's internet connection with my tower for over 3 weeks now(i was able to do this for months with relatively no problem).  For a brief moment I was able to share the connection on Laptop #2 last night,..but once I turned off wifi and turned it back on, it no longer held the router and IP address that the tower seems to need.

The tower seems to be self address itself with IP address 192.168.2.... and then a few veriatioins on the last number depending on which Ethernet port I've plugged it into.  But consistantly it seems to think the router number is 192.168.2.1.  Perhaps that is self addressed as well?

Both connected laptops tell me the router is 192.168.0.1  Last night for a brief moment Laptop # was working with the router number 192.168.2.1  the exact router number that the tower wants to use,..and the tower was able to connect then.  Also worth mentioning that laptop is my wifes,..and she probably hasn't rebooted it in weeks, and it was the last laptop to make a successful conncetion with the tower.  Again once i turned Wifi off and on last night, it now automatically connects to routher 192.168.0.1 and the tower can no longer share it's internet.  But both laptops are connected to the internet just fine.

I'm very much considering these usb wireless units.  They work with Mac computers?

How would I be able to find out what router setup I have?  I'm not sure if it is n or g,..but i know all of my compurters are compatible with both formats.

I am using the Motorolla SURFboard SBG6580.  I looked on the web it is using n technology.

    WIRELESS RANGE
    802.11n wireless technology
But my laptops have absolutely no problem with this modem.

Hi, 802.11n is faster, if close enough, but 802.11b/g penetrates walls better if that may be an issue as far as range.

Normally the Router WILL end with a .1

I'm going to try to rearrange my connections at home tonight & see if I can glean any more info.

When you changed Ethernet ports on the tower, did you move that to the top of service order or Network Port Configurations

BD don't tear you stuff apart. I went out and got a USB wireless adapter and it's working great!  I should've done it years ago. Thank you very much for the suggestion. It's weird that my old solution stopped working but now I don't have to drag my laptop downstairs everytime I want to use my tower. Thanks again!!
