My sleep/wake button doesn't work. I cannot believe that there is no alternate way to reset my ipod? My wifi is not working (it's "greyed out") and one of the restore suggestions involves restarting it.

Just try :
- Restore from backup. See:
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
