MAIL - NOT SENDING

I have two email accounts. One with Gmail and another witha local server. Mail is always SENT with the local server but now while sending large attachments (photos over about 5 MB) the whole thing just stalls and refuses to send. Other emails are coming in but I cannot send even a small email. Any help would be just great - deadlines to meet!
