Software Update not responding

Software Update is not responding. Every time I try to open software update, it gives me the spinning wheel, and doesn't progress. Eventually, it tells me that App Store is not responding, and I have to force quit the app store. I tried going through the Terminal, and nothing happened after I typed the command (using sudo) and entered my password. I'm also having trouble installing programs using OS X's installer app, and I'm wondering if these problems might be related.

Try this:

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Have you tried reinstalling OS X? Boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the command and R keys whist booting) and at the Recovery screen, elect to reinstall OS X (this will not do anything to your data as you are not going to erase your boot drive).

But first, in the Recovery partition, use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair your hard drive.

Try reloading the Appstore:

Hit Command+R at any screen in the iTunes, or Mac App Store, and the page will reload with whatever new data is waiting. Reloading an App Store page is an easy way to resolve quite a few common issues, like when the App Store claims to be inaccessible, new app updates aren’t displaying, or when recently purchased items are missing from the Purchased list.

If this doesnt work You might want to try and re-indexing your volume.

From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.

  1. Click Spotlight.
  2. Click the Privacy tab.
  3. Drag a folder or an entire volume (your hard drive) to the list.
  4. If prompted for confirmation, click OK.
  5. Remove the item or volume you just added to the list by clicking it and then clicking the minus ("-") button.
  6. Close Spotlight preferences.

Spotlight will re-index the contents of the folder or volume.

Good luck 🙂

If Disk Utility is reporting errors that cannot be repaired, you won't be able to install ML anew on that Disk as the installer 'checks' the disk before starting the installation process.

If you reformatted (erased) the disk, did you run Disk Utility again to verify the newly formatted disk (yeah, I know that it shouldn't format if it's damaged, but...).
