How to unlock Iphone 4 Verizon?

Hi,

My friend just bought a GSM Iphone4 Verizon from someone but isn't with Verizon. She does the no contract thing with a mobile company called Straight-Talk. (It's sort of like a pre-paid thing).

But I'm trying to figure out how to help get her phone to where it isn't lokced into only Verizon. I've heard that unlocking a phone can allow any carrier, but I've also heard unlocking only allows international carriers? Plus, we tried calling Verizon to ask for an unlock and they said no. So we have no clue how to get her phone to work...

Not sure what you mean, but Verzon is a CDMA only carreir, NOT GSM, and the only place you can buy a Verizon phone is from Verizon.

If this is a Stainght Talk phone, it's not Verizon.

For all GSM iPhones, only the carrier it's locked to can provide unlocking.

uselessSABATOGE is correct. The Verizon iPhone 4 is CDMA only. If it happens that it's a 4S, it will be both CDMA and GSM. However, Verizon will only unlock a phone for a current subscriber in good standing.

There is no such thing. Verizon is a CDMA carrier. The Verizon iPhone 4 does not contain a GSM radio at all. You can not use it with any carrier other than Verizon or an MVNO that they own with their approval.

No, but when it comes to the iPhone, it doesn't matter. Voice calls and SMS messaging go over the Verizon CDMA network. The iPhone 5 does not do voice over LTE on Verizon. You can not put a Verizon SIM card into a CDMA iPhone and have it work, even if that phone supports the same LTE frequencies in use by Verizon.

Incorrect. LTE is not necessarily GSM, and currently doesn't carry voice. For example, no SIM card is needed to use Verizon LTE data and

voice/SMS is still carried by the CDMA channel.

"GSM" is a set of operating operating specifications, independent of the particular digital technology being utilized.

You're almost correct. 😉 An LTE SIM is necessary for using LTE data (note the 4G iPads) but yes, voice/SMS is stil carried over CDMA. Verizon 4G devices will not activate without a 4G LTE SIM.

But spot on about the reference post being incorrect.

not really. I am not saying talk is currently on gsm if you're on verizon's network.

voice/sms with verizon = cdma right now

3g data with verizon = cdma only

LTE data = GSM, with fallback to 3g cdma

whats difficult about this? But it does make the statement "verizon is cdma only carrier" incorrect.
