I have Mac OS X 10.8.4, but my mother has 10.6.8 on her MacBook. She cannot open a .doc file she downloaded an hour ago, and she cannot change the permissions on the file type the same way I can with Mountain Lion. How does she open the file on her machine?

What is the error message she gets when trying to open the file? Does she have the latest update of MS Word for Mac?
She receives a message saying that certain file types are "locked for (her) protection." I am able to change permissions for such files in ML, but she hasn't been able to do it in SL, and I don't know enough about Macs to help her--PCs are my thing!
