Q: Browser suggestion for G4, puleeze...

Alas, Camino, purple Yahoomail finally did you in for me. 

 

Years ago, you guys were so helpful putting me onto Camino when I needed a browser.  And I stuck with it even longer than its creators did.  But now, I can't get into my Yahoo account with Camino,

 

What should I do ?  Use small words.

Version 10.3.9

1.225 GHz PowerPC G4

1MB L3 Cache

256 MB DDR SDRAM

 

Verizon Broadband Internet Service

G4, Mac OS X (10.2.x), OS X 10.2.7

    You can still get to Camino 1.6.11 which was the last version that supported OS 10.3.9:

     

    Camino 1.6.11

     

    That might satisfy Yahoo Mail. Worth a try.

     

    The root problem is that OS 10.3.9 is now left so far behind its mama can't find it. You could try getting to 10.4 or even 10.5, but the disks could cost more than a used G4 is worth.

     

    I have several G-series Macs--all are struggling with any web activity. Even though they are on our 50MPps home network, some web pages load at dialup speed.

    Mizzable. 

     

    Should I try "getting to 10.4 or even 10.5"?  How can I buy those disks?

     

    Other browsers I could try?

    If you upgrade the RAM in that PowerMac, you can purchase and install OS X 10.5 Leopard.

    Your model PowerMac can take up to 2 GBs of RAM

    Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

     

    You can try and call Apple direct at 1-800-MYAPPLE and ask for software sales. Tell them you have a older PowerMac and that you need a set of OS replacement discs.

    As far as I am aware, they will have either OS X 10.4 Tiger replacement discs or OS X 10.5 Leopard.

    If they offer you a set of OS X 10.5 replacement restore discs, take those.

    There will be a minimal charge for processing and shipping. Under $20 U.S.D..

    Your PowerMac will run fine on OS X 10.5 Leopard.

    Use the Software Update feature of OS X to update the OS to OS X 10.5.8. and, also update all of your other Apple apps and security updates.

     

    If Apple no longer carries these replacement restore discs, look for full retail OEM OS X 10.5 Leopard on either Amazon or eBay.

    Forget minimum amount of RAM!

    You'll see best performance of OS X 10.4 or 10.5 with the max. RAM!

    RAM is cheap now and even cheaper for older model Macs.

    Your Mac model can take 2 GBs of RAM max. DO INSTALL THIS!

    You won't regret it.

    Agree with the Max RAM...

     

    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

     

        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

     

    minimum system requirements

     

        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)

        * DVD drive for installation

        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

    Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.

    I'd fill up all the free memory slots with the max size memory stick.  I'd guess you'd end up with 1.75 gig.  I'd say 1.25gig would be the minimum.

     

    512meg +256meg = 768meg wasn't enough with TenFourFox in 10.4.  I'm now at 1gig with 10.4.11.

     

    You probably won't be able to use the new Yahoo.

    It has been tailored for use with Intel Macs only.

    I pay Yahoo twenty dollars a year so that I can use pop/imap to allow me to read my mail with Thunderbird.
