Data migration?

Hi,

Can anyone tell me the best way to transfer data and settings from my old PowerPC iMac to a brand new 27in iMac. I've looked into the wi-fi option, but it's going to take over 50 hours! I'm guessing that a cable would be better, but the sockets don't match – firewire on the old machine, gigabit ethernet on the new one. Is it possible to buy that sort of cable and, if so, which brand is best?

For your new Mac you should get a Thunerbolt to Firewire conversion cable.

Another option you can consider is the option to make a Time Machine backup of your old Mac onto an external drive, and use that backup to migrate the files onto your new Mac. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

I suggest you not to transfer applications. Most of them are probably PowerPC apps so they won't work in your new Mac
