Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Thank you for this help.... I did exactly what you suggested and the console does report a problem.

Here's the details... Not too much pasted just the action of Dictation in the Notes App reported by Console.

Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process "assistantd". The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Step 1

Boot in safe mode.* This will cause certain caches maintained by the system to be rebuilt.

Safe mode is much slower to boot than normal.

When the login screen appears, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

Step 2

If Dictation still doesn't work after booting in safe mode, enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings

. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

If Dictation didn't work in the guest account, stop here and post your results. If it did work in the guest account, continue.

Step 3

Back up all data.

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.assistant.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash, then log out and log back in. Test.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

The Apple Tech Guy said: "I didn't know anyone used that feature"!!!

Well You've been simply awesome... I did all of this steps 1... then 2 then finally as a last ditch effort #3

I got the little Bell Ding the first time I pressed fn twice, so I thought you had fixed it for me but the bell was all I got...

I spent 2 hours working on this today and feel it's becoming an obsession... I'm all for Givin Up now and waiting for a Whole New OS with Mavericks...

If I can stand some more I'll set up an appt. with the Apple Store locally...

If you have any more ideas I'll certainly be willing to try them but lets not kill ourselves over this annoyance.

Thank you,

Sincerely Grateful, (PS The Apple Tech Guy said: "I didn't know anyone used that feature"!!!

Do you have any network monitors, firewalls, antivirus, "secure keyboard" utilities (some AV software and password managers implement this), or other security software installed on your system? Additionally, are you using any special network setups such as proxies, custom DNS servers, or VPNs to establish your internet connection? These may interfere with the connection to the servers Apple uses to process the dictation service sound bites, and may result in a crash of the dictation backgroun service (assistantd).

If you have these programs and services configured, then try disabling or uninstalling them to see if that helps the situation at all.

Other factors that may contribute are drivers for third-party audio hardware, and parental controls being set to limit the use of Dictation.

Jul 14, 2013 5:56 PM in response to Topher Kessler

Excellent point…. Yes I am a Musician and I have a few older programs installed that very well could be the problem such as REASON 5 and APPLE's LOGIC PRO 9 Plus some Screen Casting software that can record any system audio from any source… so I will eventually try disabling those one at a time to see what the culprit is.

Also I'm taking my MacBook Pro to work tomorrow and hooking straight to ethernet hard line to see if it's my Apt. Bldg. Wi FI. It may have some funky stuff going on in that installation.

Yes… We'll we've eliminated a lot of stuff this weekend so we'll see what the work week brings… Thank you again.

I will be in touch for everyone's benefit when I find out what it was…. Talk to you soon!

Sure... I tried hooking up to ethernet at work... no change... also deleted these & restarted...

1) ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.assistant.plist

2) ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.assistant.support.plist

3) ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.assistant.token.plist

4) Turn Dictation (via the System Preferences) on again

Okay so here's what I did. I changed my DNS settings to Google's DNS settings 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

No Luck

Uninstalled a couple programs that put custom audio drivers in the mix... made sure the drivers were gone...

Some other software I have that might be affecting???

Apple Logic Studio 9.1.8, Reason 5, ScreenFlow, GargeBand w/ all Jam Packs

Anyways I've tried a dozen fixes that was on another Apple thread with the same problem.

Still DEAD....

Thank you for your help if you can think of something else to try..

Sincerely, Robert

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.

These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.

Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.

Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.

Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.

Step 1

Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:

kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.

Step 2

Repeat with this line:

{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit

This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.

Step 3

{ launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit

Step 4

ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit

Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.

Step 5

osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit

Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.

You can then quit Terminal.

Took out Screenflow and related files i.e. Telestream files, & kext audio plugin...

rebooted.... still no Dictation...

damm..

It was a good idea though... so I'm considering restoring to a Time Machine Backup to 1 month ago when I first got this new MacBook Pro and dictation was working.. but I hate to go through all of this if when all is said and done I still don't have Dictation....

I'm at work now with an unfiltered Wifi No restrictions Plus Ethernet unrestricted....

and she don't work here either... so I dunno... what to try next...

You might try reinstalling OS X on your system. This can be done by rebooting with the Command-R keys held down and then choose the option to reinstall when you get to the OS X Tools window. This will only replace system files on your computer, and not touch your user directories, personal data and settings, and installed applications, though be sure to back up before doing it, just in case. If the problem is with some damage to a system file or two, then this will replace it and may help the situation.

Dictation Does Not Owrk
