Battery not recognized brand new

Just bought my Mac it says the battery is not recognized and is running off the power adaptor. Refuses to charge. Please help

Try a SMC reset:

If that fails, bring it back to the Apple store to be fixed.

You might also try to run a hardware test. This would tell you if the battery is defective.
