You are wrong. That virus only runs on Windows.
This is what I found....
in one user (who is an administrator) if have the following situation....
while on the internet, the "fbi moneypack" screen appeared. It would not allow me to close the screen.
however, it did allow me to open a new window, clear history, etc.
so i can do all functions but remove this window with moneypack screen---how can i close that screen out
thanks
Force quit the app.
sorry, im new to mac system...
I finally cleared off the moneypack screen by going in and out of the loop that told me my computer was frozen and asking me if wanted to stay or leave the screen.....it was however, very strange situation
i guess that is what you were telling me to do
thanks for your help,
a novice
For future reference, force quitting is done by holding down the Command + option + esc keys at the same time, then selecting the application you want to quit, then selecting Force Quit.
Command + option + esc on a Mac is like control + alt + delete on Windows.
As has already been pointed out, that's not Mac malware.
From your description, I'm guessing that you're seeing a pop-up window in your web browser that has no close box and no buttons for dismissing it. This is not malware, simply a nasty JavaScript on a web site. That pop-up may very well be part of an attempt to install malware on your computer, but you aren't using Windows, so it won't affect you.
If this guess is correct, force-quit your browser according to the instructions that have already been given. Then, start your browser again while holding the shift key. This will prevent the browser from trying to re-load the pages that were open when you forced it to quit.
Since you're new to the Mac, you may find my Mac Malware Guide useful:
Hey man I am with you, I just got the FBI virus last night and scared the living day lights out of me. But yes all one needs to do is force quit. I researched online for ways to remove it and found all the cases that one couldn't remove the site by force quiting are cases where the victim has a windows pc. But does anyone know if there could be something with the virus that slows down loading times or is that just the network I am on.

No you didn't. It doesn't run on Mac OS.

As many have said it's not a virus or any type of malware, just a persistant JavaScript window that cannot impact you network access in any way, once the window is gone.
For your benefit as well as anybody else that's still listening, the easiest way to get rid of the dialog is to:
It showed up on my iMac yesterday while in Safari.
Most of the instructions here are how to make the immediate problem (frozen screens) go away. I lucked into one of the methods (disabling Java) by poking around. My question is would this ransomware have left anying on my computer that I need to get rid of.
Also, what protection program should I have to prevent this from happening again.
if you feel there may be something on the mac you can go to safari preferences/privacy and remove all website data and keep pressing that button until no websites show underneath it.
then click the word safari in top left corner, then reset safari
after it's reset, quit the safari applicaton and then reopen it and it should be fine. 🙂
you are incorrect there is a version of this virus that can infect a mac. there is plenty of supporting documentation for this online!
He posted that on July 13, before anybody knew this "scareware" was infecting Macs. Chillax. 🙂
scareware and script JAVA trash isnt a virus. 😐

I hope you meant disabling Javascript as that's the only problem that's been identified for OS X.

No chance.

I'm sure that using Firefox with the "Noscript" extension would prevent it, but it's a PITA to use in that you have to figure out and enable any script that you need on each website. There's probably something that works with Safari, but I can't really test it without knowing where a poisoned site is.
