sending mail
can't send mail on OS 10.6.8 Any ideas on how to fix it?

That article looks out of date. I believe the incoming and smtp mail server settings have changed. Try using this article instead: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html.
