Matrix DVD will not play

I play lots of DVDs on my PowerBook and they all work fine. I then ordered the DVD of The Matrix and put that in and my PB's disk drive started laboring and making a lot of noise and the video stuttered terribly.

The DVD does not appear to be scratched and I tried it in a standard DVD player connected to a TV and it worked fine.

I've tried other DVDs in my PB and those work fine too.

Any suggestions? Has anyone had a similar problem?

PowerBook G4 1.5ghz, 1GB, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, Ryan.

Check the packaging / label for the following message:

"This DVD will not work on a Macintosh CD ROM"

See this page, where that was reported by another person under the heading "DVDFLIX.COM Warning."

I did look at the back and it says "The enhanced DVD-ROM features will not work on a Macintosh computer." But it doesn't say anything about regular playback -- I assume that should still work, right?

I would not assume that, given the earlier information I posted.

That specific DVD has caused a number of problems for Mac users, even some home DVD players. This Google search will help you find other reports of problems with the DVD.

There was another AccelerateYourMac tip here, but given that it was from 1999, it may only apply to Mac OS 9.

In researching this, I read somewhere else that folks were able to play it in VLC Media Player. I don't have The Matrix on DVD so I can't test it, and all the reports of problems with it have discouraged me from purchasing it on DVD.

I downloaded the VLC media player and that solved the problem. It would be nice if the DVD just worked in Apple's DVD player, but this solution isn't bad.
