Since Tuesday I keep getting the message that iTunes is down or unable to connect. However I was able to rent a movie from my mac and I've been trying to somehow play it on apple TV or my iPhone and is not working. HELP please!

Try rebooting your router as a start.
I tried it and it work for a bit but then it went back to saying it is down or unable to connect. It works on my mac book and iPhone. I also reset my wireless routed and I'm still getting the message.
Are you getting all the icons on Apple TV or just computers and settings? If you are using wireless to connect the apple TV I have found Ethernet cable to the router better if that is an option for you?
