So, what are the benefits of using @icloud.com as opposed to Gmail or Hotmail?

A @icloud.com mail is the same as a mail you can get from Gmail or Hotmail, but a @icloud.com address allows you to use Notes in iCloud. Apart from that, it's the same mail account you can get from any other mail provider
