Bookmarks Bar drop down files/folders have disappeared

All of my saved bookmarks in the bookmarks bar section under "Collections" in safari on my iMac have disappeared. I can still see my bookmarks on the toolbar but I have a lot of bookmarks saved and organized in various folders. I liked the dropdown menu for the Bookmarks Bar section in collections a lot better. Trying to add a new bookmark will show the bookmark on the toolbar but nothing shows in Collections. I also can no longer delete added bookmarks as that was a function that seemed limited to the dropdowns under Collection. Dropdowns are not showing under the history heading either. I am able to add folders or bookmarks under the Bookmarks Menu folder. I have rebooted my computer and tried resetting safari but nothing has helped. Does anyone have any thoughts?
