When I first got my iPad, I set up the messenger to be able to send and receive iMessages on my wife's iPhone number, so every time she got a text it also came up on the iPad, and she could send them as well. I don't remember how I did it, and now I would like to change it to my iPhone number. Anyone know how I can do this? My apple ID has my iPhone number on it but iMessage on iPad still only shows hers.

Go to Settings > Messages and sign out of the Apple ID that is there, and sign back in with yours. Also be sure that your phone number is selected under Send/Receive At and if it says waiting for Activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to activate
My apple ID is the one we have always used. I have changed the phone number to my own but for some reason it has not carried over to messenger or FaceTime for that matter on the iPad.
Take a look at this kb article. It might have the a solution for you in it. Make sure that you go all the way down to the bottom of the article to see some of the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch specific information. You may have to turn off and sign out of FaceTime and Messages on all devices and the start over again on one of the phones in order to add the number to the iPad.
It's usually best to use an email address (free gmail.com).

None of this seems to work! I have even tried creating a new apple ID but when I log into message or FaceTime, it won't ask for a phone number now. What is going on
You may not have needed to create a new Apple ID because this could cause issues down the road.
Do you have your own iPhone that you use with iMessage?
I do have my own phone but it is unreliable at this moment, trying to make it through another couple months before contract is up to get another one. New apple ID didn't help anyway will prob just delete it
Did you look at the one link that I provided? TMM also posted the link, but sometimes sifting through one of TMM's boilerplate responses seems a little bit overwhelming - at least it does to me.
I just want to be sure that you did try the suggestions in that kb article.
Ok I finally got it! I was not using my apple ID to sign into iMessage on my iPhone, as soon as I did that it showed up on messages and FaceTime on iPad. Thank you everyone for your input.
