Gorilla glass? Yeah, right.

I am so disappointed with my phone right now. I was sitting outside in a lounge chair and my phone slid off the chair and fell onto the ground. The drop was maybe 12" and the screen/glass cracked. I am extremely annoyed! I could understand if I dropped it from a higher mark or onto a rocky surface, but come on. I am not at all happy with this "gorilla glass" right about now. I thought this stuff was supposed to be nearly unbreakable, yet it cracks because of the smallest fall???

When I run my finger over the crack, I cannot feel it. It runs the width of the phone, but on the very upper part of the phone so it's not interferring with the display at all. Can something like this be fixed easily?

So frustrated because I take such good care of this phone. 😟

AppleCare (no +) extends the plan from 1 year to 3 years.

AppleCare+ is more "insurance" than "warranty", covering accidental damage where warranty does nto cover accidents. After you get the replacement, ask if you can add AppleCare+.

Oh man, $229? That is not good. I think I only paid $199 for the phone when I got it!

Sigh. If the crack is straight across the width of the phone, is there a chance it could spread? It's not on the display part at all.

Anything is possible. Remember that $199 you paid was the subsidized price. If you were to purchase a new one, it would be over $650, you can get it for $229. Pretty decent deal in my book. One of the things I like the best about Apple.

Many years ago I had broken a phone and it was out of warranty. My only option was to purchase one new, for full price.

You paid a discounted price as part of a carrier deal. Full price was likely $600+ without any contract.

Without being an Genius technician I can still safely say "Yes there is s chance it will spread, a chance that is too high if it were my phone".

Thanks, all. I am aware it was a discounted price to begin with, but even knowing that doesn't make spending an additional $200+ dollars any easier.

I do not have insurance with Verizon (my carrier).

Do they have to replace the whole phone? Or is that $200 the cost to replace just the glass?

That is of course only available for a Mac computer.

Not exactly. AppleCare+ extends covereage of manufactured items from one year to two. In addition it adds insurance-like protection against things that happen in the user's posession. It's not a typical insurance policy, because there is no protection for a lost or stolen item.

The glass is approximately 90% if the iPhone. Make sure to have all of your data (songs, photos, contatcts, app data) backed up before attending the Genius Bar Reservation. You can use iTunes or iCloud to accomplish that backup.

Make sure to offer Apple feedback via the correck venue.

Make sure to tell them to make the iPhone out of something that doesn't break when you drop it after opting out of AppleCare+

Appreciate the info, but no need for the snarky comment about feedback. I don't even recall being offered AppleCare+ when I bought the phone. That's neither here nor there though because I've never purchase insurance for my phones before. My previous phone was a Motorola Droid which also had 'gorilla glass' and it certainly took more of a beating (and stayed intact) even after I had given it to my 17 year old son. Is it so wrong to be annoyed when such a small fall cracks my glass?

If you bought AppleCare+ (note the +) you can pay $50 for a replacement.

If you did not, pay for an out-of-warranty replacement, about 50% of the cost of a new unit.

Unfortunately, I never thought to buy the AppleCare+ for a phone. I likely would have for a laptop, but not for a phone.

applecare and applecare+ extend it to 2 not 3 years and its pretty unlikely they would allow him to get applecare+ after something has already happened

You can always check with your carrier and see if you are carrying insurance on your device. Also, never hurts to see if you can get an upgrade at a discount.
