My source list in iTunes is missing. How do I get it back?

I am trying to test several ipod nano 6th generations I'm giving away as gifts and my source list doesn't show up in iTunes, so I can't eject the ipods before I disconnect. Same problem with syncing iphone and ipod touch. Where is my source list? How can you do anything without it (locate device, sync, etc.)?
