Time Machine restore issues

Hi Everyone,

I recently upgraded my internal HDD on my MacBook Pro to a 1TB unit and went to restore everything via Time Machine post-installation. All seemed fine for about five minutes (I was browsing the internet, playing iTunes, etc.), and then everything suddenly froze. Music stopped, programs wouldn't respond, and my cursor turned into that spinning rainbow thing (not sure what Apple's title for that is). I tried restarting the computer two or three times, but after a few minutes of usage, it refused to cooperate. Could the backup itself be corrupted? If so, why would it work for several minutes before freezing? Presently, I'm working with the original HDD; the 1TB sits on my desk next to my external (Time Machine) drive---both mocking me. I would appreciate any light shed on this. Thanks!

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.53 GHz), Mac OS X (10.7.5)
