I have had an iphone 5 for a week now. This is the first time it has died completely. It was charging earlier today, but now will not charge at all. It will not come back on at all or register that it is being charged. I have tried different chargers and it still does not register as it is charging. I have held down the home and power button like everything I have read said to do, but it still will not turn on. Any other suggestions?

Try holding down the home button (which is the only physical button on the front of the phone) and the power button, both at the same time until you see the apple. As soon as you see the apple, let the buttons go and the phone should come back on. If that doesn't work, let me know.
Connect to computer iTunes and try recovery mode:
Before putting the phone into recovery mode, please try a hard reset. Recovery mode will erase everything on your phone and if you do not have a proper backup, you will lose everything. Recovery mode should only be used when you have no other choice
The only reason I recommend doing the reset again is to make sure it is done properly... If still nothing you can try the recovery mode and make sure you are using an apple charger.

You cannot make a backup if iPhone died.

There's no such thing as a "Hard Reset".
It's 3Rs:
Restart
Reset
Restore
Call anyone at apple technical support and they will call it a hard reset, att sometimes calls it a soft reset, some people call it a reboot. Either way, what it does, essentially, is disconnect the phone from any source of power for a brief moment to help get a fresh start. Fussing over the terminology I used will not help fix the OP's issue
Also, I know that you cannot make a backup if the phone is not on. What I said was if someone were to put the phone into recovery mode they would lose everything, if they didn't have a backup. That is why I suggest a proper reset prior to putting the phone into recovery. That is all. Nothing I posted was incorrect and your advice was not wrong either. I was simply giving the OP a suggestion prior to recovery because of the potential loss of data. n
