Commercial software, available to consumers, that "claims" to be able to do this generally runs around US $100. I have no experience using any of this stuff, thus cannot comment on whether it works or not. Services that provide this ability generally charge more, but use more sophisticated techniques, generally not available to consumers.

If by "lost" you mean that you can't find them, search Spotlight. If you mean that they've been deleted, restore from a backup.
A simple trick is to start the application (Pages, Word, ...) and then go to to File > Open Recent...
"Time machine" is a built-in backup tool that works with your Mac and an external drive, As the problem you described, I read it. The files deleted in Trash bin could be a different problem which Time machine can't solve. you can read this article and learn more. I hope it will help.
