Yup, they can be deleted without issue. To delete the application itself, just drag it to the trash, and empty the trash. Some of the applications have supporting files which could take up a lot of extra room. To find those, click the little blue magnifying glass in the upper right corner, and search for the application's name. Then, just trash the files it find which are related (mostly in the Application Support folder).

Hi: Apple's generic Install left me 74.58 Gigs Disc Memory available (from 100GB but actually about 92GB). I did a fresh "Erase and CUSTOM Install" (choosing not to install extra Languages, Foreign Fonts, Printer Drivers, Trial Software, Applications I don't use ... ). 86.78 Gigs Disc Memory available after the Custom Install and Updates. I saved 12 Gigs. Don't forget Your 80 GB Drive is actually about 73GB minus the Core Software. I believe the only way to do what I did is an "Erase and Install". Wait to see if anyone corrects me. Argh...i did a format harddrive and reinstall..but i dunno how to choose which components to install, so nw end up beng the same.

It took me about an hour plus for the format and reinstall process. So any easy way to regain those GB of diskspace nw without going thru the erase and install thingy?

thx for the response 🙂

Hi Nee Kun: If You choose to "Erase and CUSTOM Install" (which includes the whole Operating Software), when You get to the "Install Type" stage, choose "CUSTOM". You'll see small triangles. Click to open a "Drop-down List". Un-check the Items You don't want installed. An Apple Tech can walk You through if You're not sure. I call 800-275-2273 within USA. Again, in an important situation like this, I'd get some more opinions. MLR

btw, to delete (uninstall apps) is jz merely dragging the folder storing the apps to trash OR dragging the app executable file to trash?

E.g. Office MAC is installed in folder Office, in the folder there is 3 major app file which is word, excel, and powerpoint. In this case drage the folder OR the app file itself?

Sorry for asking tis as i am worry tat corrupting the system if not properly uninstall.

Hi Nee,

There are printer drivers, languages, fonts, and applications that you can choose to install or not to install. When you insert your disk and after restart go through the process, you can choose to Archive and Install, or do a Clean Install under the Options tab at the bottom of the window. After you make your choice and move to the next window, you wil see a Customize button at the bottom of the window. When you click on that button, you will see your install options.

Hi Nee Kun: I don't know of a better way other than what Mike Vande (above Post) offers. I was in your situation a few Years ago, so, reflecting on that I'd say, have an Apple Tech can walk You through, telling You what You can choose NOT to install (in fact, that's what I did). Remember, you'll be using this Computer for years. It's best to take your time and do it right the first time (or second, it took me three). MLR

I know I posed this before but, here it is:

I thought the same thing when I got mine untill I learned that we have all of the powerPC arcitecture installed in Tiger and Universal Applications. You can download Monolingual off of Version Tracker to remove unwanted languages and PowerPC Arcitecture. If you remove the PowerPC stuff some applications will not work especially anything that runs under Rosetta. The languages take up about 2gigs.

We will have to wait for Intel only apps and OS before we regain the lost space.

Hi Nee Kun: I copied this from a previous Posting (not mine) ...
If a program has an uninstaller (in it's Application Folder), use that. (if not)
You simply drag them to the trash and then empty the trash.
Then do a 'find' using parts of the program name. That will reveal any items you might have missed. Be very careful not to trash any questionable Files.

In the MS Office case, just trash the folder. That will trash everything inside the folder as well, including the apps. Same thing goes for other Applications which may be in their own folders (for instance, the iWork '06 trial).

If you want to reclaim some space without reinstalling, you can do a couple things. One would be to trash some of the printer drivers located in /Library/Printers. I would not recommend this until you are more familiar with the Operating System, and you feel safe with such an operation.

Also, you can remove many of the language files with various third party utilities. My favorite is Monolingual. Run that utility, and it will recover hundreds of megabytes from a default installation of OS X. Just make sure to read the instructions beforehand.

Welcome to the world of OS X. I'm sure you'll feel more comfortable with it soon.
