Can't make international calls on iPhone 4s.

My carrier says there is no barring on my account so it must be my phone settings. Also would this mean I can't text an international number? Thanks

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3

In settings/phone turn on dial assist. That will help you with the international dial out prefix to dial overseas numbere. Then if you wanted to ring me you would dial +61 7 XXXX XXXX with the + giving you the international dial out prefix for dial out of your country, 61 is my country code, my area code is 07 but the leading zero is ignored and XXXX XXXX is my landline. If you wanted to ring my cell phone you would dial +61 xxx xxxxxx My cell number is 0xxx xxxxxxx, the leading zero is dropped if calling from another country

Thanks ocean20 but I have the correct prefix and number. My friend text the same number I tried and it worked. So it's not my plan or the number. The issue is a mystery and since my carrier said I should be able to call or text international numbers I assume the problem is my phone. I don't have any other issues with it.

As an alternative while you sort out the SMS issue, does the remote party have an iPhone? If yes, you could try sending iMessages instead. Since they go via TCP/IP and thru Apple's servers, if both phones have data plans there may be a better chance of success. Plus you can send them between iPhones, iPads, iPods Touch and Macs.

Thanks Ocean20 and courcoul.

I'm in Australia and I'm trying to call/text Cape Town South Africa.

My friend is on holidays there from Australia. They have an iPhone 4s which they put an international simcard in before they left. Their phone is working fine as other people can contact them so it comes back to my phone.

Either set dial assist in settings/phone to on and then dial + 27 (area code without leading zero) (phone number without leading zero)

Or

0011 27 (area code without leading zero) (phone number without leading zero)

If that doesn't work then I would contact your carrier to make sure your plan does indeed support making international calls

Thanks for all the help. I have tried everything but nothing changes. I have contacted my carrier for the third time and they still say there's no reason I shouldn't be able to call international numbers. I can't see any settings in my phone that would make any difference either. Extremely frustrating.
