Icons have disappeared

Icons have disappeared

I'm having a problem seeing most of the icons on applications and the toolbar that shows wifi, battery status etc.. I can see the box where the icons are supposed to be and I am able to push the buttons but all of the icons are invisible (I can't see them). Thanks for your help!

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities! First, I would try performing a Safe Boot. It can help resolve software or directory issues that may exist on the startup volume. You can read about it here:
