How do I turn off OS notifications in upper right corner

How do I turn off the little banner notifications for system updates, it's driving me insane, it pops out every five minutes. In Notifications in System Preferences there is nothing there for the OS, only various specific applications. Thank you.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

None of the above apples to 10.12.2 . I can't find anyway to stop the extremely, incessant, every ten minutes literally prompts to link to and join icoud. I have no interest in icloud. It's a real nuisance to me and icoud steals my documents indiscriminately without any way to recover them . I get warnings all will be erased unless I pay money to upgrade. In other words, they are held hostage and the annoying demands to join icloud persist.

I know updates are necessary and I do perform them regularly, but these notifications pop up all the time. And if I dismiss them, they pop up again 5 minutes later... and again and again. Downloading a 300mb OS update and then restarting actually takes some time believe it or now, and I don't think it's that crucial every time, all the time. The constant notifications are almost a nuisance. You can't even change the frequency of the notificaitons, so they seem to be a constant nagging, which is annoying. That's just my opinion.

If you want an "in-between" option to baltwo's excellent suggestion, go to the System Preferences > Notifications, click on each entry, and UNcheck everything, similar to mine here, after moving (dragging) every entry from the "IN" category to the "Not In" category:

This does not eliminate the menu icon; it just pretty much disables it, but you can drag an entry back in or leave one in just in case you want to be notified.

Updates may be necessary; however, I find Notifications incredibly instrusive and annoying. I do not wish to be notified about anything - if I want to know if I got an email, I'll check the mail. I also do not want any system or app updates automatically - I will check and then download/install it at my convenience rather than Apple's.

As you point out, you can disable all the non-update items by dragging them out of Notification Center. We agree about the appropriate capabilities of Notification Center in these cases.

That just leaves Software Updates. I believe there are appropriate options to deal with that in System Preferences > Software Update.

Remove the App Store from your computer is the best way to disable annoying notifications. It also speeds up your computer considerably. The spinning beachball you get on launching apps on startup is often partly due to the amount of background checking the app store is doing! My biggest regret is following the notification and upgrading to ML, my computer has been slow as a snail ever since:( I have made the decision to revert to Lion and not use the internet updates anymore purely so I can have a functional computer in terms of speed and scrollbars that actually work easily

Unless you have the app store in your startup/login items, it will not launch until you launch it; therefore, its background storeagent scanning your hard drive should not be running until the app store is launched. You can also easily stop that process in Activity Monitor any time you wish.

Removing a system application is not a good idea; in this case it is not advised as the app store is now responsible for all updates including necessary security updates, etc. Removing it is much like removing a wall from your house in order to get rid of a bug sitting on it. The suggestions on how to disable Notifications work just fine. There is obviously some (possibly third party) conflict/incompatibility on your machine - I'd check into that. You may have some software which runs fine under Lion, but has not been updated or known to work flawlessly with ML or Mav.

OSX checks for updates even if app store is not launched. I would highly recomend removing the app store. Ok you can't get security updates, but it does stop all the dysfunctional changes to the interface in apps and osx that apple seems determined to inflict on users in arrogant microsoft fashion. No there is not a third party incompatibility with my machine it is a top of the range power book with an out of the box install and nothing else, which I bought to disprove all the dismissive comments that the slow new versions of osx was due to machine quality and third party software. OS ML ***** big time, apple has arrogantly inflicted useability changes on users to force a certain model of use. hence I recommend disabling app stor, it stops apples game plan and helps your machine run faster.

Christopher Davis2, in case you are still following this thread, please do not follow the suggestion of gmd12. You should under no circumstances ever consider removing the Apple Store, or any other component built in to Apple's system.

If you want to disable notifications (which I do not recommend), there are ways to do it within the context of user-available options you are given.
