You only need Windows if you have to use an app which is only available for Windows. Can you explain your question more?

Because when I finioshed migrating my info, the machine asked me a number of questions inferring I needed a windows programme, and asking me to back up before creating a "partition"???

Do I need windows to run the transferred programmes or can the new OS run all my old files, that I have accumulated on Windows 7 Ultimate for the last 5 years??

If I were you, I would use the Mac as usual, but check the files you migrated and try to open them. If you see any error message, copy it here and we will try to help you. Maybe you have files that are designed for a Windows application but it has got a version for Mac
