Q: Can I use my old mobile number for my iPhone?

I want to use my old T-mobile phone number for my new iPhone 5 and I was wondering if this is possible. I don't really want to add all my contacts again as this is time consuming and I don't really have time to do that at the moment. The iPhone has this option to change the phone number and I wanted to know what this meant and if i can just enter my old phone number there and all my contacts would appear. Both my iPhone and my old Samsung phone use the same T-mobile tariff. Can someone help me?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4

Is this a number that you are currently using? If so, you would be able to use it if you take the SIM card out of the phone you are using and have the carrier switch it over to the new one, since the iPhone and the Samsung use different SIMs. I think that is what I'm understanding you want to do. If not, try a better explanation.

Thank you, that makes sense and may have actually answered my question. So would I need to phone up t-mobile and tell them I want to switch phones but using the same number?

Well, the number and account information are stored on the SIM card. You might need to check with them to tell them you are going to use a different phone, but normally you don't have to. That is the great thing about GSM and SIM cards. You just change out the SIM. I do not know, however if they require different plan information with an iPhone. Some carriers do.
