You cannot use iTunes on your computer to update, but you can update wirelessly as shown here:

No. Your phone requires 10.6.8 which cannot run on your hardware.

You will no longer be able to sync with your computer if you do update your phone, so, "continue doing what I've been doing".

No. It will not. If you update to 6.1.3, you will not be able to sync media or anything else from your old PowerBook to the phone.

To clarify my response in consideration of the two that followed:

You can update your iOS wirelessly, and that you can do without any computer at all.

But wjosten's clarification is right on - if you do so, you will lose the ability to sync with your computer.
