I have an old iphone 3Gs that I'm taking offline but still going to use. Is there a way to delete native apps like iCal to free up space?
Not sure that it matters BUT, I'm on 4.0.2 which is super fast on 3Gs. Do I need to JB this thing to be able to lose the apps I want?

The built in Apps can not be removed.

Sorry, no idea what can be done with JB, and it can't be discussed here on Apple's support forum.
Jailbreaking cannot be discussed her. it violates the software license agreements, surrenders any support from Apple or this forum and may end up disabling your iphone permanently
Even if jailbroken, the only ways to get ride of them, is by hiding them
