pdfs display as black pages in Safari

PDFs I try to open in Safari show up as a black page. I've tried removing the files recommended by various online sources:

---AdobePDFViewer.plugin

---AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin

...but the only thing that did was make the black page open in a VERY TINY window.

This seems to be a common probllem. Does anyone have a reliable solution?
