Ipod wont sync or charge.

My 120gb ipod classic wont sync or charge. If i plug it into my ihome alarm clock it will play music but not charge. If i plug it into my car stereo via dock connector it will play but not charge. If i plug it into my macbook it wont charge but will light up and itunes wont recognize it. If i plug it into my pc it wont charge and it says usb device not recognized. Can a bad battery cause it not to sync and to not charge? my itunes' are up to date and my cables are brand new and work on my iphone.
