Thanks. I saw that article, nothing there that helped. It works fine with my iphone 5, and from the chart in the article it looks like ipad 2 should work. I'm stumped!

It could be that your car stereo needs a firmware update. See:

I figured it out! Turned Bluetooth off on my phone. I had already unpaired the car stereo but apparently phone was interfering even though it was in the house and car was in garage. Thanks for your responses.
Nice going! Yes, Bluetooth travels quite a distance - at least 40 feet as I recall.
