Logic Pro X - is "New Track with next MIDI Channel" gone?

I know there is "New Track with Next Channel Strip/Instrument" but this is weired.

when I use this one, it creates a new track with another "new" instrument.

yes, it works exactly same as "New Software Instrument Track".

what I need is "same instrument, next MIDI channel" and it existed on Logic Pro 9.

this is a terrible problem.

when I need to add a new channel for a multi-channel instrument like kontakt, there is no way to do this now.

someone plz tell me if this feature still exists and I just couldn't find it.

Logic Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

It's not gone, it's a bug. If you create a new multitimbral instrument with more than one track, it creates one of those new fangled track folder thingies.

If you try and add a new instrument with the next mIDI channel in the middle of the stack - it does it, but also duplicates an existing instruments' mIDI channel assignment. If you add one at the end/bottom of the stack, then it creates a new track.

Unfortunately, it's not a new track, but a duplicate of another standalone track too.

This functionality is definitely broken.

The “New Track with Same Channel” menu item / keyboard shortcut in LPX works exactly the same as it did in LP9. Its functionality hasn’t changed.

And neither does it work as you suggest 🙂

If you have a software instrument track set to Midi channel 1 and then perform a “New Track with Same Channel”, you do see a new track. However, if you change the Midi channel of the new track (for example to 2) then it will ALSO change the Midi channel of the original track. You would now have two tracks playing on Midi channel 2 – not very useful (and the reason is because it doesn’t allocate a new object in the environment – the two tracks refer to the same object, so as one is changed, the other is changed).

This is exactly the same behaviour in LP9 and LPX, same menu items, same functionality.

But in LP9, we had “New with Next Midi Channel” – this DID create a new object in the Environment and could therefore have a different Midi channel. This menu item and keyboard shortcut IS missing in LPX.

The only way to achieve this functionality in LPX is either 1) to tick the multi-timbral check box when adding a software instrument or 2) to copy the object in the environment and set the midi channel manually.

Apologies, you are correct, i didn't notice that it was changing the midi channel for both.

Wow, that is going to be a right pain if you forget to set it up initially as mult-timbral and enter the number of tracks that you 'expect' to be using for that session!

I've not had to manually adjust things like that in the environment - I will have to spend 10 mins tonight looking in to the best way to do it.

Once you've duplicated it in the environment window, changed the channel, do you just drag the new strip onto the tracks section?

It's still a bug though isn't it? 'Next Channel' setting isn't working as it should, surely?

No probs 🙂

It IS very confusing because there is nothing in the track list that shows that the two copies are linked.

Yes – a right pain, because the only chance you have to easily create multiple tracks for a multi-timbral software instrument is when you first create it.

So to create a new track (that can have a different Midi channel) for an existing track:

1) Select the original track in the track list

2) Go to the environment (Cmd-0), the object representing the original track will be highlighted.

3) Alt-drag it in the environment to make a copy.

4) Drag the copy just created in the environment to the track list. A confirmation dialog will be displayed – click create.

5) Now change the midi channel of the newly created track in the track list
