Q: iPhoto frozen in full screen mode

Hey need some help here.  I have my iPhoto library on an external hard drive.  For some reason whenever I open the iPhoto application it automatically goes to full screen mode.  The problem is there is an error message stuck behind the full screen app that I can't dismiss.  I have tried to look for the Application Saved State in the library, but it does not exist for iPhoto.  I do not know if that is because I have the library on external disc or not.  I have also tried to delete the preference file to no avail.  Also, turning off the options in Preferences->General does not work.  Is there a saved state that exist on the external drive under the iPhoto library "contents?"  Is there any other way I can get the app to not open in full screen so I can dismiss the error (the error is iPhoto saying it can't find a certain image file)?  I appreciate the help!

One more thing.  I tried opening the iPhoto on another macbook pro and it opens in the same state as mentioned above.  Thanks again!

Can you get out of full-screen mode? If so, do that, then quit and relaunch.

No.  The menu bar doesn't appear in full-screen mode when I bring the mouse to the top of the screen.  I have also tried the keyboard shortcuts to get out of full-screen, which also doesn't work.  I can't click on anything on iPhoto (it just makes a noise each time I click).  The reason I know the error message is behind the full-screen app is because when I go in and out of mission control I can see it there for a fraction of a second before it disappears.  Also, iPhoto wont let me quit when doing a long press on the dock icon (I assume because of the error message), so I am forced to Force Quit to shut it down.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. You'll have to hold down the option key while launching iPhoto in order to select the libaray. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    LInc,

I did what you said in the previous post, and it did not help.  It opened the iPhoto in exactly the same state, and I was unable to get out of full-screen or dismiss the error pop-up messages.  Any other ideas?

Launch iPhoto in your account while holding down the option key. Click Create New... in the dialog that opens and create a new library in your home folder. Does the same thing happen? After testing, you can delete the library you created.

It opens normally when I do this.  This is why I think there is some sort of saved application state information in my iPhoto on the external drive.

    You have the following options:

Restore the iPhoto library from the most recent backup that predates the issue.

    Repair or rebuild the library.

Scavenge the library with iPhoto Library Manager independently of iPhoto (Library Rebuild). Books, calendars, and slideshows won't be preserved.
