How do I back up Logic Pro X installation?

Hi all,

I want to purchase Logic Pro X, but I'm a bit uptight about making sure I can install this version again when it's time to upgrade. I have my discs from 8 & 9, so they are simple. X, however, I want to be able to maintain a complete, 35gb installation of the app on a backup drive.

First, is it possible?

If it is, any quick instructions for a how-to?

Thanks!

The only means to have a reliable backup at hand when needed, would be via a bootable backup. And for this to work smoothly, you'll have to maintain this backup also. A solid method if one does not have access to a speedy internet connection. But the official way is a reinstall from the appstore I believe.

THe big advantage of buying apps from the App Store is that you can re-download/re-install them any time you want, as long as you are logged in with your Apple ID. Even the 40GB of Additional Logic Content.

Just make sure that you backup your user data, on-site and off-site (preferably in the cloud)

Hope that helps

Hi guys,

Let me be clear about this...

I know you can do a full, complete, whatever install/download from the app store. That's not what I'm concerned about.

What I'd like to know (and thank you kcstudio) is if there is a way to keep the installers around like you can with the Mountain Lion install in such a way that you don't have to rely on the app store to do a reinstall. In other words, think this way... I live in a place where downloading 40ish gigs might be a 10-month process because my data is capped at 4 gigs/mo.

This might seem crazy, but in some places in the world this is typical. If I am living in one of those places, I want an on-hand backup. I'm hoping that I can do better than a maintained image as backup... I'd like to be able to get to an installer on a portable, local hard drive.

Is that possible, like it is with ML?

THe installation from the App Store is a three part process:

  1. Download the installer FIle
  2. Install from the installer file
  3. The installer file will be deleted

What you are referring to is to save the Installer file. With the OSX it was possible because aftert step 1, there was a confirmation if you want to preceed with the installtion. At that point you could locate the installer file and save it to an external disk before continue with the process that deletes the installer file.

Logic X performs the whole installation in one step, so you have to quickly locate the installer file once its downloaded. Also the first 2GB of additional content is also includd in the initial installation process.

THat window switches the progress bar from indicating the download size to 'Installing". So it is also one process. I haven't looked for where the file is cached during installation

However, this initial 2GB is also located on the window when you want download the rest of the content (ist line Essential Sounds).

I second the need for being able to grab the installer with additional content. I run Logic on 2 machines (allowed for with Apples license) -- my desktop and my laptop. It's "awesome" that I need to download 40GB twice!

So if anyone makes forward progress on a step-by-step to address the OPs question I'd love to hear about it. Meanwhile I'll experiment around a bit and see if I can grab the installer(s) in less time that it would take me to just give up and download them again for my laptop.

(and thanks, btw, for the clues about the installer sequencing. that will be helpful as I try to find a way to pull this off)

When you download/re-download an app from the mac app store it temprarily stores it in /Users/<USERNAME>/Library/Application Support/AppStore/

Once the install has finished it deletes the file so you may be able to copy the file whilst its in there.

Also, not tried this but try holding option while you click on purchases in the app store, it may give you a download only option like it does for OSX Installers

Alternatively you can copy the /Applications/Logic Pro X.app to back up the program only.

The above is just for backing up the app.

Ive also backed up the plugins and samples by making a copy of /Library/Application Support/Logic

There are also some files in /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple which may be worth copying

Hope that helps

A bit of further information - While the sound/plugin packs are being downloaded (before they are installed), the installer creates a randomised directory under /private/var/ and puts all of the files in there.

For example:

/private/var/folders/zz/zyxvrgjl6csfvcn_n0000000000000/Cleanup At Startup/PKInstallSandboxManager/1.sandbox/Root/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Jam Pack Symphony Orchestra/Promenade Viola 01.caf

In addition, it appears that some content is also installed to /Library/Applications Support/GarageBand/

Cheers

I'm wondering the same thing. This is a HUGE download and I have yet to be able to completely download all the plugins (35GB) without internet connection problems. Most internet services are throttled after reaching a certain cap. Mine is one. There must be a way to save the downloaded files for install without having to wait a few days for the download??????

I have the same problems with a fresh install of Yosemite. I try out so many programs and my hard drive gets so cluttered that I usually do a complete format/re-install once a year and this is getting to be ridiculous.
