I have 2GB of RAM installed in my mid-2009 MacBook Pro, but when nothing is running, only about 900MB are free. And just having this discussion open in safari with nothing else only leaves me with about 150MB! Why is this?!

The minimum memory for using Mountain Lion is 2 GB...but that barely runs the operating system. You would be far better off with 4 GB installed. Check OWC, http://www.macsales.com and Crucial, http://www.crucial.com for great ram for Macs.
Absolutely agree - 4 GB RAM should be considered an absolute minimum, more is better. Both Lion and Mountain Lion are RAM hungry.
