Yes. Leopard will work with only 512mb of RAm but you are wisely going to up grade to the maximum of 1.5gb. That way you will get the best performance with a moderate cost. The specs for the iBook 1.42GHz.

    Built-in Memory

    512 MB

    Maximum Memory

    1.5 GB

    Memory Slots

    1 - PC-2700 DDR333 200-pin SO-DIMM

    Original OS

    Mac OS X 10.4.2 (8D37)

    Later OS

    Mac OS X 10.4.4 (8G32)

    Maximum OS

    Mac OS X 10.5.8

Apple states the following basic Leopard system requirements, although, for some specific applications and actions (such as iChat backdrops) an Intel processor is required:

    • Processor: any Intel processor, or PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz and faster) processor
    • Optical drive: internal or external DVD drive (for installation of the operating system)
    • Memory: minimum 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM (1 GB) is recommended for development purposes)
    • Hard drive capacity: Minimum 9 GB of disk space available.

Yes.  The big gotcha about Leopard though is that you won't be able to use the Classic environment.  So if you depend on Mac OS 9 compatibility, you'll want to partition the drive for 10.5 and 10.4.11 or earlier, which requires erasing it.  But you should anyway be backing up before upgrading as my tip illustrates.
