Q: iMac drops WiFi connection

My iMac, iPad, iPhone and Macbook are all connected wirelessly to a BT Home Hub.  The iMac repeatedly drops the connection and when I try to re-connect I get a message saying "Connection time out".

If I re-boot the Hub, I can re-connect but only for about 5 minutes and then it goes down again.  When it is down and I look at the list of available networks by clicking on the WiFi symbol at the top of the screen, it does not show BT Home Hub but shows 3 strange characters.  Once I re-boot the router it shows BT Hub again.

My other devices never disconnect.  BT are telling me I need a new Hub but I don't think I do...surely all the devices would be affected if the hub was at fault.

Any ideas?

    Hi,

Certainly could be the hub, or not!???

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
