Data Cost

I am due for upgrade on my phone and want to upgrade to iphone5, the sales staff at my Service Provider mentioned that few apps are always communicating with the apple server and apple uses "Orange " in UK to communicate from South Africa so the data cost will shoot up. Is this correct ?
